ASCAP - (American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers) is a membership organization founded in 1914. It consists of thousands of composers, authors and publishers. Every week, hundreds of new members are added to this organization. ASCAP collects fees on gross receipts of the broadcasting stations, less agency commission and wire charges. The organization shares revenue equally between writers and publishers.

BMI - (Broadcast Music Inc.) represents thousands of writers and publishers and was founded in 1940. The organization is owned by broadcasting stations and is a competitor of ASCAP. BMI charges broadcasters a fee based on adjusted gross receipts. BMI makes payments to its affiliated composers and publishers less operating expenses and reserves.

SESAC - The smallest of the three organizations and is a private licensing company founded in 1930. They represent hundreds of publishers and writers. SESAC allocates to its members a percentage of the profits of their operation less overhead. The organization charges fees based on fixed determinants. In addition, they license and collect fees for domestic mechanical and synchronization rights.

MEDIABASE - Mediabase electronically monitors more than 1,700 radio stations in the top 150 U.S. metro markets, 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week. Those radio stations are broken out into specific radio "panels," and included in the most appropriate format. Songs moving downward for a pre-specified number of weeks are removed from the charts

NIELSEN - Nielsen owns and runs BDS (Broadcast Data Systems) and Soundscan. BDS uses computers, internet and other means to track large stations throughout the country and the information is compiled and sold to labels, management, radio group owners and other companies tracking airplay of a particular song, product or market. BDS is used to create the Billboard airplay charts and they monitor about 80% of the radio stations. Soundscan is for retail sales of your CD.

HARRY FOX AGENCY - In 1927, the National Music Publisher's Association established HFA to act as an information source, clearinghouse and monitoring service for licensing musical copyrights. Since that time HFA has provided services for publishers, licensees, and a broad spectrum of music user.

SOUND EXCHANGE - SoundExchange is the first organization formed in the United States to collect performance royalties for sound recording copyright owners (SRCOs), featured and non-featured artists. SoundExchange is an independent nonprofit performance rights organization that currently represents over 3,500 record companies, their 6000 labels and thousands of artists united in receiving a fair price for the licensing of their music in a new digital world.

RECORDING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA -The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is the trade organization that supports and promotes the creative and financial vitality of the major music companies. RIAA members create, manufacture and/or distribute approximately 85% of all legitimate recorded music produced and sold in the United States.
  ISRC - (International Standard Recording Code) is the international identification system for sound recordings and music video recordings. Each ISRC is a unique and permanent identifier for a specific recording, independent of the format on which it appears (CD, audio file, etc) or the rights holders involved.

AFM - American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada is the largest organization in the world dedicated to representing the interests of professional musicians. AFM has a membership of more than 90,000 musicians.

AFTRA - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) is a national labor union that represents over 70,000 performers, journalists and other artists working in the entertainment and news media. Representation covers everything from broadcast, public and cable television news, sports and weather, drama and comedy, to soaps, talk and variety shows, documentaries, children's programming, reality and game shows.

AGMA - American Guild Of Musical Artists is the labor organization that represents creators of America’s operatic, choral and dance heritage. Through advocacy and defense of their rights, AGMA protect artists that may be vulnerable to exploitation or illegal discrimination.

COUNTRY MUSIC ASSOCIATION - As a professional trade association, CMA membership is available to those working in the Country Music industry. Over 20 types of membership are offered for every category of industry professional, from behind-the-scenes studio engineers, to front-of-the-camera artists.



BMG - Bertelsmann Music Group, is the umbrella that owns over 200 record labels and companies. These include Arista’s Records, Arista’s Nashville, RCA Records, RCA Label Group Nashville, the Windham Hill Group, BMG Canada, BMG Direct, BMG Distribution, BMG Music Publishing, BMG Special Products, BMG Television, and BMG Video.

NARAS - National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, is the former name of the organization now called The Recording Academy. Established in 1957, The Recording Academy is dedicated to improving the quality of life and cultural condition for music and its makers.

NARM - National Association of Recording Merchandisers is the leading trade association for music retailers, wholesalers, distributors, record labels, multi-media suppliers, technology, telecommunications and media companies. They are suppliers of related products and services.



NSAI - is the world's largest not-for-profit songwriters trade organization. Established in 1967 and comprised of nearly 5,000 members, NSAI serves and promotes aspiring professional songwriters across all genres of music.
